    About the role

GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, enabling organizations to increase developer productivity, improve operational efficiency, and accelerate digital transformation. The company embraces AI as a core productivity multiplier and fosters a high-performance culture driven by continuous knowledge exchange.

We are looking for a skilled Cloud Platform Engineer to join our Runway team, GitLab’s internal Platform as a Service implementation. You will help design, build, and maintain the infrastructure and developer tooling that powers our engineering organization, focusing on Kubernetes-based platforms and GitOps practices.

This is a hands-on technical role suited for someone who thrives at the intersection of infrastructure, automation, and developer experience, helping development teams focus on delivering features by providing built-in monitoring and scaling capabilities.

    What you'll do

    • Operate, maintain, and improve production-grade Kubernetes clusters across cloud environments.
    • Own and extend ArgoCD-based GitOps workflows, including Application Sets and deployment standards.
    • Write, review, and maintain Terraform modules to provision and manage cloud infrastructure.
    • Monitor platform health, respond to incidents, and drive improvements to availability and performance.
    • Collaborate with application teams to onboard services and create self-service tooling.
    • Implement RBAC, network policies, and secrets management to ensure infrastructure meets security requirements.
    • Integrate platform capabilities with CI pipelines like GitLab CI or GitHub Actions.

    What they're looking for

    • 3–5 years of experience in a platform, infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE role.
    • Solid hands-on experience with Kubernetes in production (EKS, GKE, or AKS preferred).
    • Demonstrable experience with ArgoCD or comparable GitOps tooling.
    • Proficiency in Terraform for cloud infrastructure provisioning.
    • Experience working with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
    • Comfortable writing scripts and automation in Go, Python, or Bash.
    • Familiarity with Helm for Kubernetes package management.
    • Understanding of networking fundamentals: DNS, load balancing, ingress, and service mesh concepts.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

    Nice to have

    • Experience with service mesh technologies such as Istio, Linkerd, or Cilium.
    • Familiarity with policy-as-code tools like OPA/Gatekeeper or Kyverno.
    • Exposure to observability stacks including Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, and Loki.
    • Knowledge of Crossplane or other Kubernetes-native IaC approaches.
    • Contributions to open-source projects or internal platform tooling.
    • Experience with multi-cluster or multi-region Kubernetes architectures.
    • Relevant certifications: CKA, CKAD, AWS Solutions Architect, or HashiCorp Terraform Associate.

The hot takeJeff's read on Gitlab

GitLab has put more effort into their employee marketing and policies than 99.99% of the companies we've researched over the years. Seriously, their handbook is absolutely massive.

The ONLY thing that throws me off about them is an unclear statement about their stance on what "work from anywhere" actually means. They say:

"All-remote means that each individual in an organization is empowered to work and live where they are most fulfilled."

But they also say that hey need to have an entity in your home country in order to be hired, so I'd love to know if they have a list of the countries they will hire from.
