    About the role

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge projects. Our vision is a world in which every single human can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.

The Foundation is seeking a Lead Learning Experience Designer to create innovative, engaging, and accessible learning experiences that strengthen the capacity of volunteers and communities across the Wikimedia movement. You'll partner with Foundation teams, affiliates, researchers, and subject matter experts to understand learner needs and identify barriers to participation.

This role goes beyond traditional instructional design, requiring you to think like a learning product designer to develop solutions ranging from online courses on WikiLearn to multimedia content and AI-enabled support. It is intended for an experienced individual comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy in complex, evolving environments.

    What you'll do

    • Design and develop innovative digital learning experiences, capacity-strengthening resources, and performance support solutions.
    • Partner with product teams, community groups, and subject matter experts to identify learning needs and contributor challenges.
    • Determine the right learning approach for each opportunity, including self-paced courses, videos, workshops, or embedded guidance.
    • Rapidly prototype, test, and iterate on learning experiences using modern authoring tools and AI tools.
    • Apply learning science and user-centered design methodologies to create inclusive solutions.
    • Evaluate learning effectiveness using learner feedback, participation data, and other qualitative and quantitative insights.
    • Contribute to the Foundation's learning strategy by staying current with learning technology and digital engagement trends.
    • Ensure learning resources reflect Wikimedia's values of openness, collaboration, equity, and knowledge sharing.

    What they're looking for

    • Experience designing and developing digital learning experiences for diverse, global audiences.
    • Demonstrated experience creating engaging e-learning, instructor-led, virtual, or blended learning solutions.
    • Experience using a learning management system (LMS) to develop, organize, and publish learning content.
    • Ability to diagnose capability gaps and rapidly design, build, and improve learning experiences.
    • Excellent written communication and content development skills with the ability to simplify complex concepts.
    • Experience collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders and subject matter experts.
    • Commitment to accessibility, inclusive design, and culturally responsive learning practices.

    Nice to have

    • Experience working with volunteer communities, open knowledge initiatives, or international organizations.
    • Experience designing learning for multilingual audiences and collaborating across cultures.
    • Experience using tools such as Rise, Storyline, Camtasia, Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or AI content generation platforms.
    • Experience partnering with product teams or using product design approaches like user research and prototyping.
    • Knowledge of experimentation methods, A/B testing, and learning analytics.
    • Familiarity with Wikimedia projects or open-source communities.
