About the role
Zyte is a globally distributed team dedicated to solving complex web data challenges at scale. We unlock access to open web data to power competitive intelligence, analytics, and AI pipelines for organizations ranging from startups to global enterprises.
Zyte API powers a suite of Java and Python microservices across multiple cloud providers. As a Staff Engineer, you will lead the Core & MLOps squad, architecting the control and context planes to evolve the platform into an automated software factory.
What you'll do
- Architect the control and context planes, including service registries, SLO enforcement, and automated feedback loops for self-healing maintenance.
- Maintain multi-language client libraries, standardized workload specifications, and deployment pipelines.
- Establish gRPC and Protocol Buffer definitions, API gateway transcoding, and schema evolution rules.
- Partner with infrastructure engineers to operate Kubernetes, Terraform, Kafka, and real-time event-billing pipelines.
- Lead Requests for Discussion (RFDs) on critical platform initiatives like durable workflow orchestration and multi-cluster routing.
- Institutionalize reliability engineering by establishing clear SLOs, error budgets, and automated canary deployments.
- Participate in shared infrastructure on-call rotation and lead incident post-mortems.
- Mentor engineers across squads on distributed systems design and review system proposals.
What they're looking for
- 10+ years of experience building scalable distributed backend systems and internal platforms.
- Expertise in Java (Vert.x or Netty) and strong proficiency in Python.
- Deep experience with gRPC & Protobuf, including schema evolution and backward compatibility.
- Hands-on expertise with production Kubernetes at scale, Terraform, and Kafka.
- Experience designing automated telemetry pipelines or feature stores that adapt system behavior.
- Proven success defining SLOs/SLIs and designing fault-tolerant systems.
- Exceptional technical writing and async communication skills for a remote-first environment.
Nice to have
- Experience with durable execution engines like Temporal or DBOS.
- MLOps experience in model serving and drift detection.
- Familiarity with zero-trust networking, service meshes, SPIRE, or Cilium.
- Track record of building CLIs, SDKs, or project generators.
- Experience with large-scale web scraping and crawling.
- History of open source contributions in distributed systems.
