I need a favor from you...literally three seconds. LinkedIn is showing that viewership to this newsletter has collapsed to less than 1/25th of what it used to get. I need your help to determine if it's worth the time to keep publishing these.

IMPORTANT: I don't know if it's a glitch, a suppression, or something else. I need to know if you regular readers are still seeing this. Comment or DM me. This is not an engagement farming trick - I need to know if this newsletter is still worth the time investment.

Thank you, thank you. For now, I'll continue as normal in the hopes that someone is seeing this.

What's your worst job searching story?

Over the past month I've heard some REALLY shocking stories. Candidates encouraged to buy products to be considered for roles. Recruiters admitting that they have no intention of ever responding to "failed applicants" when the are rejected. And this humiliation ritual:

    Article content

And this bafflingly out of touch expectation of candidates.

Interviewing has a LONG way to go

One of my first interviewers asked me "how many golf balls can you fit in a 747 jet?"

I responded, "This is still for the account management role, right?"

He responded: "I just want to see how you think."

Interviewing isn't easy, but a lot of people completely forget what it's like to be on the other side of the table. I found this post the other day that reminded me of that fact:

    Article content

If the tone was off, I get it. But why ask the question in the first place? What are you actually going to learn about the candidate? You're basically trying to figure out how good they are at lying.

    Remote work is FULLY alive

I know we're inundated with constant waves of return-to-office mandates in the news. Crusty old bankers who walked to school uphill, both ways, in snowshoes. Whatever. But the data shows remote work has absolutely not changed in three years.

    Article content

How could that be? Easy answer: The articles you're reading are almost all large organizations and companies who went remote as a result of covid. Smaller companies are WAY less likely to RTO

    Kit

    Golden remote GOAT award 🐐

Marketing, SaaS, Tech · 101-1,000 · Est. 2013 · Company page on the Atlas ↗

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Kit is an email marketing platform built for creators — newsletters, automations, and landing pages all in one place, so you can actually run your business instead of stitching together five different tools.

    🌶️ Hot take

Yep, the Golden remote GOAT award is new. And Kit is the first winner. Congrats!

I love, love, love Kit. We had been using the for years at Beach Commute, but didn't even realize that they were also an awesome WFA company. Have you EVER heard of this perk that PAYS you for taking time off?!

"Paid paid vacation: An after-tax bonus of $1,000 for taking five consecutive days of vacation where you’re fully unplugged from work"

Also, this is something everyone should consider when applying for a job: You do NOT need to meet 100% of a companies job requirements in a job listing.

"Research tells us that applicants who are female or non-binary, as well as applicants who are people of color, are less likely to apply for roles they do not feel 100% qualified for. If you think you meet more than 50% of our requirements but fewer than 100% of them, please apply. We’re imperfect communicators, so think of our job postings as the starting point for discussion rather than proof that you shouldn’t apply."

Here's some stuff I really like:

✅ Strong Peer Reviews: 5.0 Glassdoor score (23 reviews). While it is just an indicator, it's a pretty strong one.

⏰ Flexible hours: Offers flexible hours and schedules.

🏝️ Vacation bonus: Never heard of this one! "Paid vacation bonus. $1,000 bonus when taking 5+ consecutive days off with three-month advance planning."

✈️ Sabbatical: After five years with Kit, you get a four-week paid sabbatical.

💵 Transparent salaries: Still, something we shouldn't have to celebrate, but here it is!

🔌 Tech stipend: "$4,000 equipment budget upon joining and $3,000 every two years (US core team only)."

🏥 Medical: Comprehensive insurance. Health, dental, and vision.

    Uberall

    New company alert!

    Marketing, AI · 101-1,000 · Est. 2013 · Company page on the Atlas ↗

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Uberall's AI-powered platform is all about turning online searches into local sales by boosting how brands present themselves in search results. With tools to outshine competitors and drive more clicks for directions, calls, and visits, Uberall acts like a supercharged toolkit for businesses to ace their online presence and reel in those sales. Since 2013 in Berlin, Uberall has ballooned to over 1.5 million locations worldwide, earning trust from big names in retail, hospitality, food & bev, and the auto industry. Cool stuff, right?

    🌶️ Hot take

Thank you to my lovely, devoted readers who send in these companies for review. I've got some genuinely mixed vibes on Uberall. Here's my scoop:

The careers page jumps straight into two panels of corporate platitudes that nobody reads. And I NEVER want to read "Be Customer Obsessed" anywhere employee-facing. What I do like is that they offer a remote work policy:

"The choice is yours: work from one of our global spaces or remotely. We offer great locations for collaborating, but coming to an office is not required."

    And a clear hiring process:

    Article content

Trust me, that's rare. And as you look through their careers page, use a discerning eye as many roles are location-specific, which can either be for timezone, or cost arbitrage. I'll keep an eye on this company, but they don't get an immediately high rating.

MailerLite was born in 2010 to give businesses a simple yet powerful email solution to help them grow. They're a team of over 130 designers, developers, writers, speakers, photographers, surfers, chess players, world travelers, dreamers, and genuinely lovely people.

    🌶️ Hot take

Dude, I cannot say enough good things about this company. They have a permanent spot in the top 1% of Beach Commute Atlas companies.

MailerLite has downloaded my brain, extracted everything we know about creating a perfect careers page that emphasizes taking an employee-first approach, and published it. Seriously, everything is perfect. And how about the flexibility and trust?

    Article content
    Eat your heart out

Oh, and of course they have an employee map, which really fires me up. We recommend that every company publishes the perks and benefits they offer employees - MailerLite has published an entire page dedicated to their P&Bs. You're over-delivering, big time. There are so many great policies in here that we want to share, but honestly I would have to copy/paste the entire page.

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Automation that moves everyone forward. Zapier is on a mission to make automation work for everyone. With Zapier, you can integrate apps like Salesforce, Intuit, Google, and Dropbox, to move data between them automatically, so you can focus on your most important work.

    🌶️ Hot take

What a week, huh? Only the best of the best today.

You all know Zapier, but before we even get into the working conditions for employees, as a product, we use Zapier for EVERYTHING. Zapier's automations literally make our business function. The tools you can integrate and automate is absolutely WILD. In terms of working for Zapier, they check every box. Check out their Total Rewards page on benefits and perks for employees.

Also, they have a wildly self-aware Next Play Program. Here's what it's about:

We're true partners in hiring, retaining, and growing our talent. Through our Next Play Program, we support all Zapier teammates and alumni in landing their next big role—internally or externally. We equip teammates with growth plans, an internal job board, defined career pathways, and personalized support.

They will help you find your next role. That's unbelievably confident and secure, especially when every other company out there wants you to pretend that you're never going to leave the company, like you're working for a Ford production plant in the 60s.

Also, check out their entire resource guide on how to manage remote work.

Here's some other perks & bennies I like:

🏝️ Flex PTO: "Flexible time-off policy (most teammates take 4-6 weeks off per year for vacation and holidays)"

✈️ Company Retreats: "1 annual company retreat to an awesome place"

🍼 Parental Leave: "14 weeks of 100% fully paid leave for new parents"

💪🏽 Wellness Budget: "Annual Live Well budget (Lifestyle Spending Account) (for wellness, travel, meals, entertainment, and other activities that help you live a fulfilled life!)"

🔌 Tech Budget: "Once-off New Hire Office Setup budget (for a desk, chair, screen, and other peripherals to set you up to do your best work!)"
