Hello from Costa Rica! I'm here with six other remote workers from around the world. Work, beach, coconuts, sunsets, repeat. (And a little pickleball, of course!)

Speaking of working from the places they make screensavers, this week we talked about the science of why you feel better living in some places rather than others. There are five personality types that map to specific locations where your body feels the most comfortable.

Where do you belong in the world?

    DuckDuckGo

    Software Dev · 101-1,000 · Est. 2008 · Company page on the Atlas ↗

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

DuckDuckGo, a free browser for mobile and desktop, prioritizes privacy with its private search, tracker blocker, and independence as a company since 2008. Their goal is to provide easy privacy solutions to all users.

    🌶️ Hot take

DuckDuckGo has the only perfect score in our database, and is THE prototype for what we look for in a work-from-anywhere company. Well, not JUST a WFA company, but ANY company. Here's the core tenets we look for:

    • Clear prioritization of working from anywhere as a business model.
    • Clear expression of trust and empowerment for employees.
    • Understanding that output > location or hours.
    • Transparent perk package.
    • Transparent salary offering per role.
    • Emphasis of employees over mission statement.

DuckDuckGo nails each of these things I look for

Any time you see a role posted, APPLY. Don't question it, just apply. Highlights:

🌍 Hire-from-anywhere: DuckDuckGo will hire prospective employees from anywhere

💰 Geo-neutral pay alert! DuckDuckGo provides salary ranges that are global, regardless of location, paid in USD.

⏰ Flexible hours: "No core hours means working when you're most productive, and taking time off when you need it."

💪 Health and wellness: "To promote your physical and mental well-being, we offer a Wellness Reimbursement of up to $1,000 USD per year."

📚 Learning budget:To promote your professional development and reinforce our culture of self-directed learning and skill-building, we offer a Learning Stipend of up to $1,250 USD per year

🔌 Tech stipend: We reimburse the purchase of a computer every 3 years and offset the cost of a phone (up to $500 USD) every 2 years to do your job. To help you get your office set up, we reimburse up to $1,250 USD to cover the purchase of office productivity items.

    Doist

    New company alert!

    🔎 What they do

Doist is all about productivity software. They craft tools that streamline and organize your workday. It might sound simple, but it's crucial. By bringing order to chaos and simplifying the small tasks, their software lets you concentrate on the significant things. Things that astound. Things that spark inspiration. Things that have the power to change the world.

    🌶️ Hot take

Doist doesn't have a ton of roles open often, so I rarely get a chance to share them, which is a shame because they are an INCREDIBLE company to work for. They have a 4.5 Glassdoor score with 35 reviews - a strong indicator. Here's some other things I like:

⚙️ Fully transparent application process, with a ton of detail.

🏝️ Work from anywhere: "Doisters can work from anywhere in the world. We never place restrictions on locations."

⏰ Async: "Design your own schedule. Work during the time of day that’s best for you. Doisters are encouraged to work 8-hour days and no more than 40 hours/week."

📕 Continue your education: "You’ll have a recurring budget to spend on attending conferences, taking courses, and purchasing books."

✈️ Retreats: Collaborate in-person at retreats. Our team- and company-wide retreats are unforgettable. The connections that we make in person inspire us throughout the year.

🏖️ Tons of vacation: Recharge with generous time off. Doisters get 8 weeks (40 days) of PTO per year to use as they wish on vacations and national holidays.

💪🏽 Wellness: Invest in your health and wellness. Take care of yourself with a monthly budget for things like a gym membership, healthy snacks, massages, health insurance, etc.

This company REALLY cares about their employees' wellbeing. When they're hiring, apply.

    Yodo1 Games

    🔎 What they do

Yodo1 helps game developers make more money from their games without ruining the player experience. They handle everything from ads to licensing so creators can focus on making fun games.

    🌶️ Hot take

Yodo1 is an absolute WFA darling...I should just have a dedicated newsletter for their job listings (I won't though). Their entire careers page is about employees, not the company. Even better, they talk ad nauseam about working remotely (which is always good for me).

"We love games, we play games, we grow games—from anywhere in the world. Will you add the next country to our map?"

    And this...
    And this...

"We don’t care about titles, your location, or the hours you work—only your impact on helping developers grow their games." I could NOT word that any better myself, after seeing thousands of careers pages. Oh, and can I get an AMEN for a clear remote work policy?

And of course I love their stance on remote work: "Travel when and where you like, get paid in your currency of choice, and enjoy flexible hours and unlimited paid time off."

    Software Dev · 101-1,000 · Est. 2014 · Company page on the Atlas ↗

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Uscreen was founded back in 2014 and started off without any external funding. It's basically a cool platform made specifically for video creators. What's neat about Uscreen is that it lets creators set up paid memberships that come with a bunch of awesome features: like building their own video libraries, offering live streams, and even creating their own little community hub. Oh, and the best part? It's all wrapped up in their very own branded site and apps. Using Uscreen can really help creators boost their brand, connect with their community on a deeper level, and keep their business going strong.

    🌶️ Hot take

Holy moly, I've got a new company for you to check out, and the rank in the top ten of our Anywhere Atlas database of fully-remote companies. One of my absolute favorite things to read about remote companies is that they started remote. That means they weren't forced to adapt to remote life during covid. It means they understand how to manage remote employees, trust them to be autonomous, and recognize their efforts based on output rather than physical attendance.

"Remote first, remote always. Uscreen has been 100% remote since 2016. We’ve accomplished incredible things alongside an incredibly diverse team; all while living wherever our hearts desire."

Here's some of the things they offer:

🏝️ Unlimited PTO: "Unlimited PTO and flexible parental leave"

🏥 Medical: Full health, dental, and vision coverage

🐖 Retirement (that's a piggy bank): "401(k) plan with company match"

🔌 Tech/office stipend: Monthly stipends for home office or coworking space

Fingerprint provides a device‑intelligence platform that creates highly accurate, persistent "visitor IDs" for both web and mobile users, helping businesses stop fraud, detect bots, and improve user experience—even when visitors are anonymous or clear their cookies.

    🌶️ Hot take

Fingerprint has a clear remote work policy - work from anywhere, and hire from nearly anywhere. The give transparent salary ranges per job listing, some solid perks, solid Glassdoor reviews, and a friendly-ish careers page. I would LOVE to see this page sell me a little harder on why I should work there..."Here's our transparent hiring process", and "We believe in contribution and trust over hours and micromanagement." With a little bit more work, it's there. That said, they look fantastic. Here's some features:

💵 Transparent salaries: I'm seeing this more and more, and I like it.

📚 Learning budget: "We want you to grow with us, so we offer a $600 yearly budget that you can spend to learn new stuff."

🏝️ Paid Retreats: "We meet up as a company once a year (We went to Mexico City in 2023!) and teams meet up in smaller groups throughout the year."

✈️ Unlimited PTO: "To prioritize work-life balance, we even have a minimum vacation days target to encourage everyone gets the rest they need."

💻 Async: "We work asynchronously and respect time-zone differences. Choose where and when you do your work best."

It's perfect if you're a coach, creator, or expert who wants to turn your content into a polished, interactive experience people can access from their phones.

    🌶️ Hot take

These folks have very very little for me to work with from their sparse careers page, BUT they have a work-from-anywhere remote work policy and a 4.7 Glassdoor score. Also, they have a lot of personality and detail in their job listings, which they REALLY should be including on their careers page. Like, seriously. I love some of the buried statements in these listings, like:

"Your success is measured by results, not hours."

    And some awesome perks like:

"Enjoy 24 days of paid vacation plus 10 days of “Celebration Leave” for holidays that matter to you."

C'mon folks, there is SO much good stuff in these listings - get it formatted on your careers page! I love it. I will say that I LOVE their employee video, which you should definitely watch. Most importantly, they look fun and genuine. Here's some things I like:

🏝️ Paid Retreats: "✈️ Team retreats to meet your team IRL in places like Portugal, Croatia & Greece and beyond"

🔌 Tech stipend: "🧑💻 Tech & Co-Working Budget to have access to the tools and spaces that fuel your focus"

    Lumos

    IT Services · 101-1,000 · Est. 2020 · Company page on the Atlas ↗

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Lumos excels in making IT operations smoother. IT and Security teams worldwide use Lumos to decrease technology spending, optimize access management processes, and strengthen their security posture. And the big guys love them - companies like GitHub, MongoDB, and Major League Baseball use Lumos to manage software, access, and vendors in one place.

    🌶️ Hot take

I like A LOT about what I see from Lumos, including their 4.7 Glassdoor rating, full medical benefits, wellness stipends, and $1k annual learning and development stipends.

The only thing (in my mind) that keeps Lumos from moving into the top tier of work-from-anywhere companies is their +/- 4 hour PST timezone restriction. That covers a lot of territory, but would limit digital nomads to only travel in the Americas. It's not clear whether or not you have to be physically located within the +/- 4 hour window, or if they will let you work those hours from anywhere.

Still, that amounts to 8 timezones. Here's some highlights:

🏋🏾 Health and wellness: $100 bucks a month for health and wellness spend.

👶🏾 Parental leave: Up to 4 months of it.

📚 Learning budget: $1,000 bucks a year on learning and development spend.

🌴 Unlimited PTO: But make sure you actually use it!

    Lower Street

    Podcast Services · 11-100 · Est. 2016 · Company page on the Atlas ↗

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Lower Street helps brands create phenomenal podcasts to connect with their audience through meaningful storytelling and the best production. They're an all-in-one partner for podcast success from strategy, ideation/conceptualization, production, editing, and audience growth. They even work with some of the biggest brands in the world, such as PepsiCo, Booking.com, and BCG.

    🌶️ Hot take

Alright, this one is tricky because their careers page is practically blank - most of their prospective employee facing content is written in their job listings, which are particularly great. If you do spend some time on these job listings, you'll find quite a bit of personality and some really solid perks and benefits. Here's my favorite line:

Work from anywhere. Your house in the country, a coffee shop in the city, a yurt in the forest -- we don’t mind. As long as you have strong enough wifi.

    Here's some more highlights:

⏰ Flexible hours & async: "Outside of ideally having some working overlap with UK working hours, we have a globally distributed, asynchronous team."

📚 Learning budget: Courses, conference tickets, books -- we’re invested in you.

🏝️ Paid Retreats: "At least once per year, we get together in cool places to collaborate and celebrate in person."

🔌 Tech stipend: "Headphones, software, staplers, fax machine (probably not that last one) -- whatever you need to be set up for success."

    📊 BeachScore Live

Our initial review of Lower Street puts them at 77% on the Anywhere Atlas, putting them in the top 35% of all fully-remote companies. Note that there isn't a ton of information about their remote policy, so that could move up their scores.

    Polygon

    Audio & Video · 101-1,000 · Est. 2017 · Company page on the Atlas ↗

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

At Polygon Labs, they believe blockchain technology has the potential to support and scale lasting positive impact on the world. They enable an infinitely scalable web of sovereign blockchains that feels like a single chain.

    🌶️ Hot take

If you've read my stuff AT ALL, you know that I don't believe productivity works in a linear way for humans. You have uptime, downtime, and life in between. We do not fit into perfect 9-5 productivity sprints. As a matter of fact, if you try to force a long sprint like that, you'll probably accidentally get LESS productivity out of your employees. You gotta let 'em breathe! And Polygon understands this:

    Here's some things I like a lot:

⏰ Flexible hours: "Non-linear workdays are encouraged at Polygon. We support our team members to take ownership of their time and schedule in a way that keeps them balanced in life and able have the impact they want at work."

⚙️ Async Work: "We believe in the future of work. Our teams are made up of contributors across 15+ time zones. We empower our teams to work smarter, not harder, with async-first communication and a culture of trust and transparency."

🏝️ Unlimited PTO: "At Polygon, full-time employees get unlimited PTO to rest, recharge, and explore the world. We have quarterly global wellness days, and celebrate all our teams’ national and religious holidays either by observing them, or learning more about their history and significance."

📚 Learning budget: "$200 Annual Book Allowance Program"

🔌 Tech stipend: "Company-issued laptop. $1,500 Home Office Set Up Allowance (lifetime max)."

💪 Health and wellness: Polygon offers country specific health insurance and benefits, egg freezing, company wide mental health support and a book allowance program per year.

Fully-remote, but lacking lots of clarity around what that means to them. They really should add some detail on their careers page AND job listings. It also appears that some leadership positions are for US employees only (noted). Company policy: "Remote first global workforcers."

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Cloud Eagle io supports Finance, Procurement, and IT teams by making the SaaS buying and renewal process easier. They help save on software expenses and ensure smooth operations for customer applications. Their goal is simple: by taking care of vendor management and cost optimization, they free up customer teams to focus on business growth.

    🌶️ Hot take

Here's what I said a couple months ago about CloudEagle:

"With dropping Glassdoor reviews I've got CloudEagle on my watchlist for the next couple of months. I never want to put all my stock into GD because employers can stuff reviews, and the bottom 10% of angry employees can bomb out a company's score. So I would love to hear from some current and past employees for a better feel of how things are going. Shoot me a note!"

🔔 Update: Glassdoor reviews have dropped to 3.0. If it dips below 3 I will drop them from this newsletter. Again, you don't want to put all your stock into Glassdoor, but it is an indicator we pay attention to.

Also, they eliminated their statement on being a "fast-paced" environment", which makes me VERY happy.

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Previously known as Clevertech, Luminalta is a group of highly-trained technologists who have supported the world’s leading brands across industries since 2000. They build custom software solutions with big business impact and have supported brands like Target, Dicom Transportation Group, and Peoplehood.

    🌶️ Hot take

Lumenalta splits their prospective employee-facing content into careers and culture pages, which can be effective when you have a lot to say. What I love most about their culture page is that they focus 100% on the prospective employee, rather than themselves. It's very tempting for companies to talk about themselves and their expectations, but it's a mistake. That comes from a place of insecurity. Lumenalta does a good job of selling me on why I should work there. Here's some aspects I like:

✅ Strong Peer Reviews: 4.1 Glassdoor score (342 reviews). That's a strong indicator with a lot of votes.

⏰ Flexible hours: "We're not about enforcing burdensome time sheets: We recognize that Lumens on our distributed teams across the globe do their best work at different times."

✈️ Sabbatical: "These can include a luxury gift, a month-long paid sabbatical or monetary recognition."

🔌 Tech stipend: "$1,000 to spend on whatever helps you feel your best, from gym gear to cooking classes and office decor. Whatever you’re into, we want you to be as fulfilled personally as you are professionally."

🔎 What they do Live from the Atlas

Spring Health believes everyone deserves access to high-quality mental healthcare. They assist businesses in updating their mental health benefits. Their program serves as a centralized gateway for various care options including digital activities, EAP services, coaching, therapy, and comprehensive medication.

    🌶️ Hot take

Heads up on Spring Health: Glassdoor reviews have stabilized at 3.1, if it drops below 3 I am going to drop them from this newsletter until the number improves. This is at the very bottom my threshold for promoting companies, so if it slips again I'll likely nix them from newsletters until it rises. While this number doesn't mean everything to me, it is an indicator. Here are some things I do like:

🏥 Medical: "Health, Dental, Vision benefits start on your first day at Spring."

👶🏾 Parental: "Access to fertility care"

💵 Transparent salaries: Fortunately you know exactly what your salary range will be.

🚨 Vague remote policy alert. I'm confident that the remote roles listed are indeed remote, but I'm not confident that they will let you work from anywhere. I'd love to get some clarification from the company. Also note that many roles are hybrid, in-person, or location-based. I've selected a few that do not list specific geographies.

    🌶️ Hot take

Ok they aren't totally new to me - they've been in the Anywhere Atlas for awhile now - but I've never officially reviewed them. And it's going to be a bit tricky to do because it's a young, tiny company without a lot to go on. The careers page is sparse and there isn't much information outside of their individual job listings to go off of. So, here's what I've got for you:

✅ Peer reviews: 4.4 Glassdoor score with only two reviews. There's not enough here to put any stock into this.

🏝️ Remote policy: "Remote first. You’ll be joining a team working from all over the world."
